Press Release

This summer, Klein Sun Gallery collaborates with Millers Fall Art Bridge in Western Massachusetts, featuring two rising female Chinese artists in a site-specific residency traversing Eastern and Western cultures. This project supports artists Geng Xue and Ying Zhu, who come together to create new multimedia works in and around the hallowed space of a church. At the end of their stay, the artists will present their finished works at Klein Sun Gallery from August 13 to September 5. Their journey will be documented through visual and written means.

A protégé of the artist Xu Bing, Geng Xue arrives in leafy New England direct from Beijing. A graduate of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Geng's experimentation with material is largely dictated by her interest in Chinese traditional culture. During her time at Millers Falls she explores Daoist philosophy, in particular the writing of Zhuang Zi. Navigating the 4th Century BC philosopher's view of existentialism, Geng combines photography, painting and sculpture, highlighting the 'holes' that are said to carry the pathways of life. This exploration begins in China and travels to the U.S., narrating both the artist's creative evolution and her first experiences on American soil.

Simultaneously, Ying Zhu builds a site-specific installation that is a walk-through dreamscape. Playing with sensory perceptions, she creates a multi-dimensional piece that triggers unexpected reactions from participants. Her work evokes dream psychology across Western and Eastern cultures, such as Freud's theories and the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. Having resided in and worked in the U.S. since graduating from the University of Omaha, Zhu is a third culture artist still investigating cross-cultural domains, especially philosophically, in her practice.
